Obesity is defined as too much body weight for the person’s height. It uses body mass index (BMI), which is a ratio calculated:

A lot of evidence suggests that body weight is the worst measure for health compared with that of waist circumference. In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health have a great explanation of the benefits of waist circumference here.

The Metabolic Syndrome is defined as a cluster of co-morbidities, all of which increase the risk that humans might become insulin-resistant (type 2 diabetes).  I defined that in more detail in a previous post here.
